An Acid Test indeed

In amongst the Local election results there was the small matter of the County Council by-election which has almost gone completely unreported, unnoticed and without examination so rather than put it in amongst my initial round up thoughts I felt it warranted a blog of its own.

Following Rosie Clarke’s sad passing on Christmas Day 2010 on Thursday the good people of Wilford Division had the opportunity to elect a newCountyCouncillor. Now interestingly given the need to focus on the other elections this was fought quite locally without a huge effort by any party in the division, thus I think it gives a really good insight into what people are actually thinking rather than the effectiveness of party machines, the result was as follows:

Andrew Reid for the Conservatives, won taking over half the votes cast as follows:

Andrew Reid (Conservative) 1,913
Christine Hancock (Liberal Democrat) 796
Roy Burgon (Labour) 758

The turn-out was 54.1 per cent of a maximum electorate of 6,455 and the majority was 1,117. There were 28 spoilt ballot papers.

The share of the vote was Conservative 54.7%, Liberal’s t 22.8 % and Labour 21.7 per cent.

Comparing this to the County Council elections of May 2009 when Rosie’s majority was 924 and the turn-out was 48.9% per cent, the Conservative vote is down 5.8 per cent, the Liberal vote is down 7.4% and the Labour vote up 12.4%.

So taking into account the protests over the necessary cuts, the discussions on the New Strategic Direction, the noise surrounding Andrea Hill and the softening of the messages following Mark Bee’s election of as Leader of the Conservative Group and the need for a period of reflection, some were projecting a collapse of the Conservative vote and maybe even a defeat for us but instead we see something quite different.

Perhaps what we actually see is that the good people of Wilford trust the Conservatives to run the County Council in the difficult times ahead, but then again I suspect that is why it has received so little coverage.

I look forward to meeting Andrew and welcoming him to the group.
