A weekend of Rememberance

A mixed week’s end came on Friday with the sad funeral of Malcolm Smith one of Mildenhall’s leading citizen’s with many years service on both the Parish Council and the District Council, having chaired both and he was also a very active member of many other local organisations. Malcolm was a carpenter by trade and we often spoke about the days when he and his father were in business and of my Grandfather who was a contemporary. Malcolm through my long involvement with firstly with the West Suffolk Conservative Association and later as a fellow Councillor on Forest Heath District Council was also a political friend of mine and simply put one of the nicest people you could ever wish to meet, always keen to help out where he could and an exemplar of public service. It’s a bit of cliché when people say  someone will be sadly missed but in Malcolm’s case never a truer word spoken.
On Saturday a few of us gathered at the West Row War Memorial to lay wreaths to commemorate the lives lost from that community in past wars. Then on Sunday morning I laid a wreath at Beck Row’s Parish War Memorial and then went on to the war grave ceremony at the back of the local Church and then into the Church for its annual Commemorative service.
In the afternoon it’s was Lakenheath turn to commemorate and as a hundred or so we march up the high street I though there were even more people lining the route and at the War Memorial than last year paying their respects. Afterward the laying of wreaths it was on to the Church for a rousing service and it was also fitting that amongst the names read out was one villager who died in the Korean War, this begin that war’s 60th Anniversary. So a mixed weekend remembering a friend and along side our communities paying my respects to all those who gave their todays for our tomorrows.
